| Alligator Fact File ~Alligators have transparent third eyelids giving them underwater protection. ~ Alligators have 80 teeth; 40 top, 40 bottom used for grabbing and holding, not for cutting. ~Young alligators can replace teeth every year or so. ~Mother 'gators will care for their young for up to two years. ~ Alligators use their feet to swim slow and to keep balance in water and use their tail to swim fast ~The animals are semi-aquatic and always found in or near the water. ~The alligators can be very vocal with the young typically make a squeak or yip sounds and adults will roar or grunt, depending on the circumstance What do Alligator eat ~ Alligators are carnivorous, eating anything they can catch, including fish, turtles, lizards, snakes, small mammals, waterfowl, and crustaceans. ~ Alligator also eat birds ~ Mammals such as raccoons, opossums, armadillos, rabbits, ~ Because alligators are "cold blooded" they use food mainly for growth, repair, and reproduction.
