~ Egyptians worshipped hundreds of gods and goddesses, many of which were represented by animals, The Sun god was the dominant deity and could take on different forms

~ Ankh was a symbol of everlasting life. A pharaoh that wore it had the power to give or take life
~ Scarab beetle ( or holy beetle) a dung beetle that represented the god Khepri
~ Cat the cat represented the cat goddess Bastet, daughter of the sun god Re, represented the power of the sun to ripen crops
~ Dog , the jackal was sacred to Anubis, god of the dead and embalming

Egyptian Mummification and Death
~ The process of mummification was intended to make an everlasting body to provide the spirit of the person, or KA, with a home in the afterlife
~ From start to finish the process of mummification lasted 70 days
~ Upon death a persons organs were taken form the body and embalmed separately in canopic jars (canopic jar pictures)
~ The Canopic jars were
Imsety- face of human - guarding the liver
Hapy -a baboon-guarding the lungs
Duamutef- a jackal- guarding the stomach
Qebehsenuf -a falcon-guarding the intestines
~ The heart remained in the body, the brain was taken out with a metal hook through the nose
~ As many as 20 layers of bandages could be used to mummify a body, using up hundreds of metres of linen
~ After mummification the mummy was encased in a sacrophagus ( a type of coffin) to ensure its safe journey into the afterlife
~ Mummies were entombed and included gifts and provisions for the afterlife, food, animals, servants and games, anything that was thought to make the afterlife more comfortable
